KC Health Initiative

KC Health Initiative is rooted in the belief that health begins with the seed — from the food we grow to the knowledge we share. By providing food access to the growing needs of Kansas City through urban farming, our wellness programs focus on food insecurities in children and families. We create a culturally grounded community rooted in education and empowerment for generations to come.
About Us
About

Our Health, Our Future

KC Health Initiative is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit rooted in land, legacy, and the belief that true health begins with the soil beneath our feet. Our mission extends beyond providing nutritious meals — we cultivate a movement of urban farming, regenerative agriculture, and ancestral stewardship that reconnects communities to the land and to one another.

Through our community gardens, farm-to-table programs, and youth agricultural education, we restore ancient traditions of growing, harvesting, and healing in harmony with the Earth. By nurturing both the land and the mind, we address food insecurity while empowering families to reclaim self-sufficiency, resilience, and cultural pride.

We are planting the seeds of health equity for generations to come — cultivating knowledge, sustainability, and a renewed relationship with the land that sustains us all.

Our Signature Initiatives

We offer educational wellness events, youth outreach, plant-based trainings, and cultural food empowerment tailored to uplift the Kansas City community.

Kids Proactive Health

We educate kids in fitness, nutrition, and mindful self-care—helping them grow confident, focused, and resilient.

Sign up today to be part of KCHI’s movement for better health.

We educate children to build healthy habits that last a lifetime. Through cooking, wellness lessons, and fitness taught by sports stars, they discover how movement, nutrition, and self-care work together to create balance and confidence. By blending physical activity with mindful education, we help young people strengthen body, heart, and focus — equipping them to grow strong inside and beyond the classroom.

Serving Up Wellness

We serve up good nutrition, serving 9,500 + plant-based meals in 2025, bringing fresh, organic meals to schools and community gatherings.

We nourish our community through the shared experience of food. From our urban farm harvests to fresh, plant-based meals crafted for daycares, retreats, and local gatherings, every dish carries a lesson in nourishment and connection. As we prepare for the 2026 launch of The Seed Kitchen — a pay-it-forward café and teaching space — our work turns every meal into an act of wellness education and shared care.

Hope Through Land Healing

We bring people closer to their food, creating urban vegetable gardens in KC’s 1st, 3rd, and 5th districts with Land Bank support. We grow school partnerships and link each harvest to The Seed Kitchen and local pantries.

We restore people and places through hands-on education in urban food production. In 2026 in Kansas City’s 1st, 3rd, and 5th districts, we’re merging ancestral growing wtih modern gardening. Partnering with schools and the KC Land Bank, we use garden spaces as outdoor classrooms — linking harvests to The Seed Kitchen, and inspiring new generations of growers.

KC Vegan BBQ Chef Competition

Every year we bring Kansas City together for a plant-based barbecue that celebrates flavor and community. Chefs and families share fresh BBQ recipes while learning how healthy eating can turn tradition into transformation.

Each year, we fire up the grills and invite Kansas City to taste what wellness can be. This vibrant, family-friendly cook-off turns plant-based barbecue into a celebration of culture, creativity, and community connection. Local chefs showcase their best vegan dishes while guests enjoy music, food education, and the joy of gathering around fresh, flavorful meals. This event reminds us that healthy nourishment can heal the body and bring people together.

Midwest Soul VegFest

Join us for our annual exhilerating three-day celebration of plant-based food, soul-based culture, and universal wellness — uniting thousands across Kansas City to honor our heritages, uplift our communities, and inspire healthy living.

Midwest Soul VegFest is where health, heritage, and hope meet at the table.
